taking responsibility

During this prac I have noticed that, our supervisor has taken another step back, in terms of independance with time management, and organisation, in comparison to earlier pracs. For example, our supervisor does not expect us to notify her that we have finished our work at the end of the day, in order for us to be able to go home, rather we should just go when we have finished our work. And on another note, it is our resposibility to chase things up if they dont get done, because this is what will be required of us when we graduate. This has reminded me that our time at uni is quickly coming to an end. And we will be out in the professional world soon, with more responsibilities. The lesson I have learnt from such experiences, is that now that we are almost Physiotherapists, we cannot expect to have someone holding our hand, and should show more initiative to get jobs done.

I very much agree with your blog. I also wanted to add that we must be proactive in seeking out continuing education. I have noticed that the happy physios that are head of their felids are the ones that continue to seek out new information and ways of doing things. Its pretty obvious, I know, but its really dawned on me that we are no longer going to sit through lectures and absorb information, we haver to go out and find it ourselves.

My experiences have been somewhat similar this year. Supervisors both Curtin and facility specific have told me straight from day one that their expectation is that I function at the level of a first year graduate physio by the end of the 4 or weeks. In these situations I have found that I felt the most confident at the conclusion of the prac, and also preferred to have the patient load/difficult progress over the weeks. In the placements where I have been given too much support, I find that it is hard to break the habit of double checking things when you 'know' that you are right. Admittedly some of this depends on what your supervisor wants from you, but I have felt more comfortabl being relatively autonomous.
